Project overview

Challenge

Seventh Generation wanted to give customers a way to locate their products based upon geographic location, zip code, city or state. 

Goals

  • Allow users to easily find Seventh Generation products using web-based functionality
  • Be mobile first but fully functional for all breakpoints / platforms (existing not functioning at all on mobile)
  • Allow users multiple ways to identify their search location so it was not necessarily based upon where they are
  • Decrease the number of clicks, inputs and time it takes for a consumer to find a Seventh Generation product
  • Integrate with Google maps for hands-free navigation

Status

The application went live and was successful. I don’t have usage analytics or further information about the measurement of success during the life cycle of this product. They are currently using Price Spider to power their store locator.

Target audience persona story

It is really helpful to develop personas for projects. It helps bring clarity to the different scenarios that we are trying to solve for and it allows design to be for a certain someone rather than a nebulous no one. Here is one example of a scenario that the product locator was trying to solve for.

 

A mom in need of diapers

I was visiting my sister Tory in Brooklyn and was playing with Gabriela in a park sort of far from her apartment. I needed to change her diaper but when I went into the diaper bag, I realized that I was completely out of diapers! It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen, you know? I didn’t want to go all the way back to the apartment just to change her diaper. I needed to find a store nearby to buy some diapers. But I really care about what materials and chemicals are next to little Gabriela’s sensitive skin. She is allergic to so many things and she can only use hypoallergenic diapers. 

In this scenario, the Seventh Generation product locator would help this mom find hypoallergenic diapers near her- whether she knew her location, or not. With permissions-based geo-location, she wouldn’t even have to know what street she was on to be able to locate Seventh Generation baby products near her.

 

Pencil sketches and wireframing

Wireframing allowed me to translate high-level business requirements into sketches to quickly iterate and determine the most engaging interface for different content types, messaging, functionality, and goals. I started with pencil sketches to quickly eliminate less desirable approaches and identify what would work best. I then moved to interactive wireframes to test drive the interface and get a better sense of the user experience.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Streamlined UX and increased efficiency

The solution provided a streamlined user experience that decreased the number of clicks, inputs and time it takes for a consumer to find Seventh Generation products by location. The new interface greatly simplified searches for specific products, helping consumers more easily locate exactly what they are looking for.

Integration with Google Maps helps with hands-free GPS navigation.
